What is a waterproof panel PC?

A "Panel PC" is a PC used in industrial applications, transportation control, marine displays, and similar equipment. Different usage environments demand different design requirements.

A "Waterproof panel PC" is designed for environments that are humid, subject to dripping water, splashes, or outdoor installations exposed to sun and rain, where waterproof performance is required of the PC.

According to the installation method, there are two main waterproof designs:

1. Front panel waterproof design: When installed in a professional equipment cabinet where the door panel has a reserved cutout, choosing a front panel waterproof PC is sufficient.

This meets waterproof requirements, allows for convenient installation and wiring, offers reasonable cost, and provides a high overall cost-performance ratio.

2. Full waterproof design: When installed outdoors without any shelter where rain directly hits the entire unit, a fully waterproof design is necessary. In addition to selecting wide-temperature electronic components, the touch screen needs to be UV-resistant and use waterproof connectors. The entire unit must have a high level of sealing to meet user requirements, ensuring no leakage, seepage, or ingress of moisture. This design has higher requirements, with the circuit board and touch screen needing to withstand both high and low temperatures, resulting in relatively higher costs.

Different applications require different levels of waterproofing and use different manufacturing materials. For example:

"Waterproof PCs used in washdown areas" can use anodized aluminum panels and powder-coated steel panels.

"Waterproof PCs for outdoor charging stations" need anodized aluminum panels and steel panels coated with outdoor-grade electrostatic powder.

"Marine waterproof PCs" require stainless steel resistant to acid and alkali corrosion, combined with anodized aluminum panels.

 Simple classification of waterproof ratings:

1.  IPX0: No waterproof protection, no resistance to water.

2.  IPX1: Vertical dripping test, resists vertically falling water drops.

3.  IPX2: Tilted dripping test, resists water drops at an angle.

4.  IPX3: Rain spray test, resists strong sprayed rain.

5.  IPX4: Splashing water test, resists water splashing from any direction.

6.  IPX5: Water jet test, resists jets of water.

7.  IPX6: Powerful water jet test, resists strong jets of water.

8.  IPX7: Temporary immersion test, resists immersion in water for a specified period without damage.

9.  IPX8: On top of IPX7, provides even higher protection levels agreed upon by both parties according to actual application needs.

Simple classification of dustproof ratings:

1.  IP0X: No protection.

2.  IP1X: Protection against large solid objects.

3.  IP2X: Protection against medium-sized solid objects.

4.  IP3X: Protection against small solid objects.

5.  IP4X: Protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm.

6.  IP5X: Protection against harmful dust accumulation.

7.  IP6X: Complete protection against dust ingress.

Understanding IP69K rating:

In many requirements, "IP69K" is a commonly seen protection level. It refers to a specific protection standard used to assess the enclosure's ability to protect electrical equipment from dust and high-pressure, high-temperature water or steam.

"Dust protection": The “6” in IP69K means complete protection against dust ingress, ensuring that no dust enters the device so it can operate normally.

"Water protection": The “9K” indicates that the device can withstand cleaning with high-pressure, high-temperature water or steam.

This means the device is tested to endure water jets at up to 80°C and water pressure as high as 100 bar, while still operating normally.
